At first there were many doubts as to whether the new graffiti on Hull's permanently raised Scott Street Bridge really was a Banksy but the artist confirmed on his Instagram account and so all hell broke loose with visitors from far and wide rushing to see it, take selfies next to it etc.

Sadly, within hours some cretin had sprayed over it but to the rescue came a local window-cleaner who managed to clean off the damage. The local council then saw the value of the piece and promptly protected it with a sheet of perspex. I'd like to think Banksy had a bit of a chuckle over all this fuss and bother.

Draw the Raised Bridge! by Banksy

The best thing to come out of it all though was the inspiration for the 'Bankside Gallery'. Instigated by a group of local street artists, permission was sought and granted from the Council and property owners in this run-down almost derelict in parts, industrial area of the city for street artists to decorate the walls with colourful murals. It's certainly brightened up the area and many people's daily commute too, as well as attracting visits from coach parties from other parts of the country, the BBC One Show and arguably most importantly, local schools on days out are using it for inspiration. Oh, and local pub The Whalebone is benefiting from the extra trade!

Over the Easter weekend, Patrick and I popped down for a drive through and had a little wander along to see it all and of course, the piece that started it all, the Banksy. Whilst there we saw a guy just starting out on a huge piece and I had a chat with him.

He explained that there are public walls and permission walls. Public walls are what the council have given permission for and anyone can go along and paint at any time, over any other work that may already be there. Permission walls are ones that the property owner has given permission for and any work there will be there for three months until it is allocated to another artist. The hope of artists is to be allocated a permission wall because that means their work will been seen for longer and when you are investing a lot of time and money (this guy had spent over £90 on paint), you don't really want the possibility of someone painting over it 12 hours later.

Here are a few photos I took of just a fraction of the amazing artwork on display but why not go down and have a look for yourself. Don't forget to pop into The Whalebone for a swifty whilst your there!
Perfectionism. Yes, you heard that right. Me, the most imperfect 'oh that'll do' kind of person in the universe suffering from a bout of perfectionism. What brings me to this conclusion is the memory of something about time management I read years ago basically saying that we put off jobs because we can't see how to deal with things in small chunks, we just see the big mess and think we can't tackle it in the time we have. A kind of perfectionism, wanting to have it all sorted out in one go. Instead we need to think of the time that we do have and choose a part of the job that we can do in that time. Eventually it all gets done and then it is easier to keep on top of.

That's kind of where I am with this blog. I want to have everything in it, in the right order, with all the photos and all the words but because I am way behind, I keep putting off this mammoth task of catching up and therefore I'm not blogging my current experiences because of that. So, Perfectionism step aside, Mrs Phuckit is coming through! Some posts might appear out of chronological order but they are long posts so they'll get done when they get done and I'll post them then. I might even post them in more than one part! Get me being all unconventional. From now on, I want to try to post as things happen or thereabouts anyway.

So, I taught myself to crochet a few weeks ago and have made a few pairs of pretty little Mary-Jane baby shoes in different colours. These purple ones are my favourite, gifted to a work colleague for his brand-new grand-daughter.

One of the things I really want to be able to do though is crochet amigurumi and Tipsy Bunny is my first ever attempt. So called because I think his facial expression makes him look slightly drunk. His ears, arms and legs are all different sizes but I am still rather pleased with him.
Lovely Day out with our friends Pete and Donna. We had first been for a drink in Pave, then the intention was to go for a bite to eat at Thai House Restaurant but as it appears to be no longer open on Saturday afternoons, we went across the road to The Persian. What a lovely surprise that was. A very small, family run restaurant offering traditional meze and kebab type fare. There was a lunchtime special menu for £12.95 which we all chose from. The boys opting for mixed kebabs with bread, rice and dips and Donna and I going for the 'meat stews', chicken for me and lamb for Donna. Again with bread, rice and dips. Everything was beautifully cooked and very tasty. You can buy wine from the menu but the owner positively encourages you to bring your own because it makes it cheaper for you! A lovely 70 year old man, who chatted to us and couldn't do enough to help. We will definitely be back for an evening out sometime.

After our meal, we went for another few drinks in the fabulous 80 Days Bierhaus where the above photos were taken. This is one of THE places to be in Hull for a great variety of beers from around the world and is one of our favourite bars.

As I'm not in a position to have a pet myself, I thought it will serve two purposes, some time spent in the company of lovely doggies and a bit of exercise at the same time. So in March, I made the effort and I'm really pleased I did.

If anyone is considering helping out, I would highly recommend it. You can just go along any day, I think between 8am-12noon and 5pm-9pm (give them a call to confirm those times). Remember to take some photo ID with you on your first visit. You can do as much or as little as you want. I tend to walk one dog, one evening straight after work each week. I'm out for about 45 mins.

I've walked three different dogs so far but my favourite has been the beautiful Madge. She is very affectionate and walks nicely.

All of the dogs you can adopt from Oakwood are trained and socialised beforehand. If you are looking for a pet, I would encourage you to check out their website and get in touch.

There are other volunteering opportunities, from admin roles to fundraising and kennel assistants. They are entirely self-funding and always grateful for any donations, monetry or food for the dogs. All information is available on the website or you can follow them on Facebook.

One of our favourite pubs in Hull is The St. John's on Queen's Road. It's a proper pub, separate rooms, characterful locals, sports teams etc. Every Tuesday they host an Open Mike night, an opportunity for various local musicians to perform a short set. The format is such that prior to the open mike session, a 'professional' act will perform a 45 minute set (to warm the audience up I guess). I'm not sure of the wisdom of doing it this way round as, a. after watching someone good, the amateurs could sound bloody awful and b. Like us, people may watch the main act and then bugger off without staying for the open mike session. However, that's what they do so it must be working for them.

On Tuesday 13th March, we popped along because the opening act was a favourite of mine, Ched Cheeseman. Ched has a long history of performing in Hull and back in the 1980s I used to go see him regularly as the frontman of Ched's Booze Band. Performing with Ched at St. John's was Bobby Joyce, whose work I wasn't familiar with until seeing him in Turn and Face the Strange along with Ched. With Bobby singing and both of them playing, it was a great set. At one stage they were joined onstage by a young woman I think was called Marie. What a voice she had! I did record a little video of the performance but I'll be buggered if I can find out how to upload it to here! When I figure it out, I'll do it.

Next up was one of my favourite artists, Glenn Tilbrook of Squeeze playing at Fruit. The night of the gig, 17th March, the weather decided that a blizzard was in order! It had been snowing a bit on an off but when we set off to catch a bus, it wasn't too bad. We got off the bus on Lowgate to Arctic conditions and by the time we had walked across the road to Humber Street, we looked like snowmen. I wasted no time at all in booking a taxi for the return journey after the gig. Once inside we soon warmed up and the beauty of a gig at Fruit is that the bar always has good craft ales on keg and in the fridge. There's always bound to be something we like on offer.

I loved Squeeze back in the day but they were one of those bands that I didn't buy any of their stuff. I have their Greatest Hits but that's all. There are a few bands like that, I guess it was just at a time in my life when I couldn't afford to be buying records or something. Anyway, I was really looking forward to seeing Glenn perform and I really enjoyed it. I think mostly because I could sing along with a lot of the songs but I understood what Patrick meant when he said he was a little bored. It wasn't a really engaging performance and during some of the songs that I didn't know, I found my mind wandering a bit too. I'm pleased I've seen him though and overall, I had a great time.
Coral and William are big fans so we had seen them a year or two back in Sheffield and thought they were amazing. We didn't enjoy the show quite so much in Hull but Coral said they usually sing with a live band but it was just backing tapes. Some things didn't run quite smoothly, the segue between songs for example. With the news now of Timmy's recent passing, we realise that he must have been feeling really quite ill which probably explains a lot. So sad, far too young to die at 36 and my thoughts are with his family and friends.

The photo below isn't that great, taken with my phone on zoom as it was but I just love the mood and feel of it. I don't know if something had gone wrong, someone sang the wrong part or whatever but the way they are laughing together shows a great camaraderie not only between themselves but with their fans.
RIP Timmy Matlett.

JillCuthhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09288638670441222325noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2303545173025280175.post-22433080652153013722018-04-13T14:37:00.000+01:002018-04-13T14:37:00.153+01:00A bit more February!Oh dear! I'm really not doing well on blogging regularly am I? What I really want to do is to blog thing just as they've happened. You know, so the memories and feelings are fresh in my mind and heart. With that thought, I've remembers a bit of February that I missed from my last post.

Knitting - I completed a cowl for Mason. A chance to practice my colourwork technique which I've been really enjoying. Just a simple zig-zag pattern but with aran weight yarn, the double thickness fabric makes a lovely cosy cowl for him for walking to work in the cold.

Before the cowl, I had knitted a hat for Joshy, the 6 year old son of a work colleague. Lucy was telling us how Josh had been to The Deep and loved the penguins, one of which was called Ralphy. Their surname being Ralph, Josh thought it was super that a penguin had the same name as his. This little tale gave me the idea of knitting a hat with penguins on. Josh loved it and apparently wore it all night, including whilst eating his tea!

It was a great project for me because I was able to practice colourwork techniques of knitting with both hands, catching floats and latvian braid. I felt I had made real progress and enjoyed it enormously.

So, onto March...JillCuthhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09288638670441222325noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2303545173025280175.post-31231566472463567842018-04-06T14:10:00.002+01:002018-04-06T14:10:25.516+01:00February Round-UpHere we are in March so I thought I'd better catch up with February before I forget it all. It was quite a busy month events-wise with a couple of volunteer shifts and a fair few social shindigs.

I decided in January that having had a bit of time off, it was time to get back into some City of Culture volunteering. So, on Saturday 3rd, I did an afternoon shift at the Brynmor Jones Library on the University of Hull campus at an exhibition called Painting Power - The Art of Terence Cuneo. I intend posting more about that on my Hull2017 blog but here is some information about the artist. I thoroughly enjoyed my shift with another lovely volunteer whose name I can't recall and we spent most of the time searching for the little mice that the artist used to hide in his paintings. He is most famous though for his painting of trains.

Whereas I am most famous for taking wonky photos! So, to remedy that and the fact that I feel I am outgrowing my phone camera, I decided to go into Jessops the next day to look into buying a reasonable compact camera. I wanted one that would do the Auto thing but also that had enough manual controls so that I could learn to take better photos. After some advice, I ended up buying a Panasonic Lumix TZ60 and have enrolled on a course for beginners digital photography at Hull College which starts in April. I actually enrolled on one starting 20th February but it was cancelled due to low numbers. Hopefully the April one won't suffer the same fate as I am really looking forward to learning how to use the camera before we go on our Scottish Highlands holiday in May.

The next weekend we were at the wedding of Patrick's nephew Andrew and his fiancee Julie. I took a few family snaps but was a bit too self conscious to go around snapping everyone.

Before that, on the Wednesday night, I went to Hull City Hall to see Erasure with my work colleague and good friend of 28 years, Debbie. Debbie has been a fan of the band since the 1980s and has seen them too many times to count over the years. It was my first time and although I enjoyed it, I'm not enough of a fan to be too fussed about seeing them again. I'm pleased I've seen them though and they were excellent.

The next Wednesday, Patrick and I were at Hull Truck to see The Culture - A Farce in Two Acts. I'm afraid this was a bit of a let-down for me. I am aware of what a farce is but this was just too much door slamming, talking too fast and unbelievable mistaken identities to be funny, it was just silly and irritating. The second half improved thankfully and we ended up rather enjoying it.

My next volunteer shift was The Feren's on Sunday 18th, again more about it over the page but it was basically invigilating the Open Exhibition, which is an annual event showing the work of amateur and professional artists of all kinds.

Next up at Hull Truck (told you it was a busy month), was Turn and Face The Strange, a show about our very own Mick Ronson. Former Spider from Mars (along with fellow Hullensian Trevor Bolder and Driffield lad Woody Woodmansey), Mick went on to work with many other musicians over his career. The show originally ran at the Freedom Centre last year as part of Hull2017. I am so pleased to have had the opportunity to see it again, truly one of the most enjoyable shows I have seen. Part live band, part film archive all wrapped up with anecdotes from friends and family it is a feast of entertainment and I think all those present learned a lot about the vastly under-rated Mick Ronson. This review from Yorkshire Post about covers it.

Finally to close off a very active February, my sister and two sister-in-laws and I went out for our monthly meal date. My sister Ann and I started it off last year, meeting up sporadically as a means of keeping in touch with one another's lives as since mum died, we don't really see each other or even speak to each other very often. Lynne and Chris joined us in November last year but then our arrangements were in danger of falling by the wayside again until Ann text me to suggest meeting on 26th February. We went to Dukes on Princes Avenue, so named after the streets opposite which are all named after Dukeries, Welbeck, Thoresby, Clumber, Belvoir and Blenheim. We had a good old natter, catching up with one another's family news and some lovely food. Between us we had the fish and chips, the baked haddock and a veggie burger. All were really lovely and the chips were real, proper chips. Highly recommended all round.

Phew! Bit of a mammoth post there and I promise I'll try to keep up with March with more regular posts.
It really is nice to be able to look back on what we've done.

So, a couple of weeks ago, Coral offered me a ticket to the ballet. Her friend had bought her two tickets as a birthday gift but then couldn't make it herself so it wasn't going to cost me anything. Can't refuse a bit of free ballet! It was a Saturday matinee performance of Cinderella by the Russian State Ballet of Siberia and it was lovely. I'm pleased I know the story because there were parts that we struggled to understand what they were portraying. The wicked stepmother was hilariously played by a male dancer and he was brilliant. A lovely day out and a G&T in the bar at the theatre.

On the Sunday, I persuaded Patrick to go to the cinema to watch The Greatest Showman. I knew it was a musical but he didn't and I was a bit concerned that he may not be enjoying it. He's not a massive fan of films where the characters suddenly burst into song and dance routines! However we both thoroughly enjoyed it. The songs were fantastic, the dancing wonderful and a great story to boot. At the end, I was buzzing, it felt almost like we had been to a theatre performance and that we should be on our feet applauding the actors. I would highly recommend anyone to see it. If I had to sum it up in one word I think I would choose Joyous. We enjoyed a lovely meal at Sleepers for tea and then home for a cuppa.

During the week, work had started on paving our front garden for a driveway. It was well underway on the Saturday of the ballet and was all finished on Monday 29th January. It will be lovely to be able to park on there and not have to park under trees and have my car covered in bird droppings every day.
The stranded colourwork was a challenge for me but I finished the first mitten and am reasonably pleased with the result. Yeah, some of the floats are a bit long and loopy but for a first project, it's not bad at all.

I'll get around to knitting the second mitt at some point but have found myself distracted by other projects.

I've knitted a hat for Patrick in the lovely Paton's Australia Jet. I bought lots of this yarn in various colourways from Kemp's a few years ago and have knitted myself cardigans and jumpers in it. It's been one of my favourite yarns to knit with and for the cosy warmth of the finished items. It is perfect for hats. This is Helping Hats by canKNITian and I knitted the Cranberry version. I have knitted this one before in beige Sirdar Hug and it's been his favourite hat but is well past it's best now. Hence the new one.

I found some Jet on Ebay last week and as it's long since been discontinued, I was rather chuffed about it. I bought a couple of balls each of black, navy and white and have just cast on a black version of the above.

I've cast on some socks for me as part of the Literary Socks KAL in the UK Sock Knitters group on Ravelry. January's theme is Beatrix Potter so I've chosen a pattern that's been in my favourites for a while now. Called 'Little Roses' with the link being that Beatrix Potter has a rose named after her and was a keen gardener herself. I'm using Cygnet Truly Wool Rich 4ply in a lovely bright yellow.

It feels good to be enjoying my knitting again after such a long time. I'm also hoping to get some baby clothes underway soon as another work colleague is having a baby in the summer. Unusually, the couple don't want to know what flavour it is until he/she arrives which I think is lovely when it's your first. So, I'll possibly knit a couple of options as I have some lovely girly patterns that I'm dying to knit.

Two nights in a Travelodge I know how to treat a man eh!

So, the plan was to visit Magic Rock Tap on Friday night, spend the Saturday mooching and shopping in Huddersfield town centre and then a Saturday night pub crawl around some of the fine ale lovers hostelries followed by a kebab at the legendary (to us anyhow) Kebabish. Sounds good right?

The drive down the motorway was horrible, filthy weather and there had been an accident so bit of a delay too. In that situation though you just have to thank your lucky stars that you are sitting in the traffic queue and not the alternative scenario. We had stopped off at the Glasshoughton Outlet and unusually both managed to find something we liked. I bought a lovely knee length padded coat in purple from Tog24 as well as a couple of pairs of ankle boots and Patrick some very nice brogues from Clarks. We usually a bit rubbish at shopping so it was nice to go back to the car with shopping bags. A scone and a hot choccie in the Thornton's cafe finished off that little excursion nicely.

After settling into the hotel room, off we set for Magic Rock Tap armed with the trusty (!!) Google maps navigation. Just as we left, it started to bucket down so I was really pleased I had decided to wear my new waterproof coat. We bumped into a former customer of our beer shop, Jez and his girlfriend, also on their way to Magic Rock. We do seem to bump into Jez often at beery type events and places. He mentioned that there was a tap takeover by Danish brewers Dry and Bitter which we hadn't known about. Jez and Helena rushed off as the weather was truly awful by now and we lost sight of them. The aforementioned Google maps being what it is, got us lost and we had to ask directions but we finally made it. At first I didn't think I was going to enjoy the experience, it was hot, noisy and crowded and there appeared to be nowhere to sit. However, we got our first drink, found a seat fairly quickly and were set for the night. Me drinking thirds and Patrick on halves, we managed to sample a fair few beers between us. The fish and chips from the visiting Hip Hop Chip Shop weren't the best ever but they served a purpose.

On Saturday morning, again using trusty Google maps to get us lost, we managed to make our way to a Wetherspoons for some breakfast. The pavements were very icy and I'm sure our resemblance to Torvill and Dean must have been noticed! Huddersfield is surprisingly well served by shopping centres although there's not a lot in the way of 'big name' shops. The outdoor market is a bit disappointing in that it's more a car boot sale than a market but the indoor market at Queensgate was vast and I'm sure you could have got almost anything you wanted in there. It was in House of Fraser though that Patrick managed to get everything he wanted. He's been looking for a nice overcoat since the beginning of the year, we've found plenty but getting one that fits properly has been challenging to say the least. Finally, on Saturday the mission was accomplished. Skopes overcoat, waistcoat and trousers, all in the sale...bargains!

Bored of the shops, we popped into the Art Gallery and enjoyed an exhibition of paintings by Maxwell Doig. The detail in them was amazing, at first we thought they were photographs. I really did like his style and methods and would certainly go to another exhibition of his works should I stumble across one.

Bit of a random and surreal moment at a zebra crossing, three guys dressed as penguins doing a Beatles Abbey Road impression. The leaflet someone shoved in my hand showed it to be a Greenpeace campaign Protect the Antarctic If you want to support their campaign to create an Antarctic Ocean Sanctuary you can click the link and sign their petition or text PROTECT and your name to 60777 which will also sign the petition.
There is some lovely architecture in Huddersfield but I only managed to snap a couple of examples and I don't even think these were the best I spotted. Patrick and Harold Wilson are looking pretty good in St George's Square at the station though.

On to Saturday night which was a bit of a car crash of a night out in a logistical sense! The original plan was that I had selected 5 or 6 pubs based on CAMRA's WhatPub website. We were to get a taxi to the furthest one from the town centre and pub crawl our way back finishing with a kebab at the aforementioned legendary Kebabish. However, in the Art Gallery, we spotted a leaflet for the Huddersfield Real Ale Trail and as the pubs were all central and the weather was foul, we decided to follow that instead. First up was The Sportsman, fantastic pub which we have visited before. Great range of real ales and craft keg beers, we really should have stayed here all night!

The Sportsman bar

Next was The Kings Head which is at one end of the beautiful Victorian Rail station and in one of the former ticket offices which still has the original tiled floor. Plenty of beers on the bar to choose from but I chose badly and left most of mine. Get a look at that stunning floor though!

King's Head floor

The next three pubs, whose names now escape me were unfortunately closed down, the next one, Rhubarb had hardly anyone in it but those that were looked like they were extras from the set of TV show Shameless. We didn't stay for a drink!

So on to The Grove, or so we planned but in true Patrick and Jill style, we took a wrong turning and ended up at The Rat and Rachet instead. This is an Ossett brewery pub and not being huge fans of their beers, we hadn't planned a stop here. We were so cold and fed up though that we were tempted in. The beer was enjoyable enough and I liked the place itself so it wasn't a bad move.

Finally, after asking directions and still taking a wrong turn, we found ourselves in The Grove. The place itself is a bit grotty to be honest but it really is a beer lover's mecca. Something like 19 beers on handpull and 15 Craft kegs, it wasn't easy to choose. The deco of the place was a bit disturbing, featuring an array of stuffed animals, a beer-loving taxidermist's delight I'm sure. I'd certainly visit again for the choice of beers though.

The walk back to the town centre was straightforward...unless you are called Patrick or Jill that is! After a bit of confusion at one of the rather large and confusing road junctions which seem to be a characteristic of Huddersfield, we found ourselves on the long road back and on our way to Kebabish. After all the hype and looking forward to this, I have to say that the kebab was a little disappointing in the end. It hit the spot though!

Of course, the story doesn't end there. We managed to get lost on the way back to the hotel again!

All in all, we had a really enjoyable weekend but next time, we wouldn't go in January, it's a much more pleasant experience getting lost in June or July!

After struggling with the technique of knitting with both hands, I got a little carried away when it finally clicked into place and forgot to read the pattern instruction properly. Therefore, my first mitten will have a thumb that is 5 rows lower than that of the second mitten because I simply ain't going to frog 5 rows of stranded colourwork. Now, if these were to be a gift then I'd put this mistake right but as they are pretty much a learning project for me, I'm not going to obsess, just continue and learn from it.

I'm really enjoying the process now I've got my fingers to do as they are told!

What did I say about not obsessing and learning and moving on etc.? I ended up tinking back, I just couldn't start the thumb knowing it was in the wrong place! LOL. Back on track now though and enjoying my knitting for the first time in ages.JillCuthhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09288638670441222325noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2303545173025280175.post-13512043721902358522018-01-02T13:12:00.001+00:002018-01-02T13:12:44.280+00:00New Year, New Start
2018. I was feeling a bit fuzzy headed during the morning at work and as it was such a lovely sunny day I decided to pop out and head for the river bank. Parking up in the local leisure centre car park, I had discovered some steps leading to fields and the river a while ago so over I went. The first sight that greeted me was the lovely cheery buttercups. So here they are.
After a restless night I was really tired at work today, put that together with the usual crap month end shenanigans and I've not been at my best. After doing some shopping, I was home late and had promised to make a vegetarian Thai curry for tea. It was very nice but may need a tweak or two to perfect it. The two boys then had to rush out to meet friends at the cinema so I was left to wash up and clean the kitchen. It's now 9pm, I have only just sat down and this sofa looks like the best thing I've seen in my life right now, never mind today!

I've really neglected this blog but keep thinking that I should get back on track with it because I do enjoy looking back through older entries. So with that in mind here I am. I'm not promising anything mind!!

So, I kept on seeing posts on Facebook and Twitter with the #100HappyDays hashtag and firstly thought it just another rather inane social media craze but it appears that there is a bit of psychology behind this one. The idea is that you photograph something every day that has made you smile or feel happy (or even just made you feel less miserable than you normally do I guess). This can be anything at all, yesterday for example I was watching the bees busying about in the garden and that was the moment I chose to tweet. You do this for 100 days funnily enough! Apparently, if you make an effort to look for things that make you happy, in time you will find that things come to you without you looking for them.

I'm usually quite a happy and positive person generally I think, but I feel I've been well walloped with the Sh***y Stick lately and that has drained my happiness somewhat! We've had such unneccessary delays on the lease of our shop and have missed out on Easter, Bank Holiday and now will also miss out on Father's Day sales, this has been incredibly frustrating and stressful for Patrick and to a lesser extent me (more on this story in a separate post). I've just discovered some rot in my house, Dry or Wet rot is under debate at the moment but either way it's a bit of a sum of money I'm going to have to find in order to have it rectified. There has been various other things too and all of this negativity lately has worn me down, so that's what prompted me to join in with this. 100 Happy Days.

What I thought yesterday as I was counting on my fingers through the days to work out that I was up to day 6 was that I could use this as a reason to get blogging again. Just a short blog post each day with my happy moment and a short explanation of the reason behind it. Twitter obviously is limited in characters so not always easy to convey the story behind a photo so my blog is ideal, plus I keep forgetting which day I am up to so this might help me keep on track!

I'll start off by posting the first 7 days of photos here and as I've completely forgotten today and so don't have a photo, starting tomorrow it will be one per day. The camera on my phone is not great sadly so don't expect National Geographic style nature photos!!

Day 1 #100HappyDays. Tues 27th May - Knit Now subscription I've deleted the photo from my phone but it was a picture of my Knit Now magazine that had plopped through the letterbox during the day. I'd had a really rubbish day and the weather was cold, rainy and miserable. I was very downhearted due to still hearing nothing about our shop lease. I was desperately searching my mind for something to feel happy about and this was all I could come up with!

Day 2 #100HappyDays. Weds 28th May - grateful for my lovely mum. Again, another wet, cold day during which I just felt completely fed up. I visited my mum after work and this was my happy moment. My mum Annie, is 93 and is in the early stages of Vascular Demetia. Some days she is rather vacant...or on Planet Annie as I like to think of it. Other days she isn't so bad but both my sister and I have noticed a marked deterioration over the last few weeks with the 'Planet Annie' moments being more often than her real world ones. However, she is still here with us and that's a good enough reason to be happy as far as I am concerned.

Son number two is home from University and we've had some discussion about his plans for the summer. He's going to try to get a job in one of the local bars or shops. He's a typical teenage/young adult really who often spends all night online and then all day in bed! I had nagged him a bit about the state of his room and as usual he was procrastinating. However, after me taking him out to tea to Pave bar across the road from our street, where he handed in a CV and got a reasonably positive response, he came home and started to tackle 'The Pit'. This made me very happy!

Day 4 #100HappyDays. (Fri 30th May - Patrick and I celebrating the news that our lease is ready to sign). We got news from the landlord's solicitor this afternoon (our bugger has gone on holiday and didn't bother to let us know that no one would answer our emails all last week!). Aforementioned news is that the landlord has approved our signage for the shop, which was the final sticking point for the lease and the solicitor asked if she could now send the lease over for signature. Patrick naturally said a big fat Yes! Please do! So hopefully next week, when our solicitor gets back from his holiday, Patrick will sign the lease and we should hopefully get our keys very soon. This set us up for a very nice weekend.

Day 5 #100HappyDays. (Saturday 31st May - Patrick and I went to Farthings Steak Emporium in Beverley to celebrate our 8th Anniversary of our first date which is 1st June). I can hardly believe it has been 8 years! My life has changed a lot since meeting Patrick, I drink a lot more for starters!!

Day 6 #100HappyDays. (Sunday 1st June - watching the bumblebees and just enjoying nature whilst we wait for the bbq) Sunday was a lovely day, nice weather and very relaxing. In the morning whilst cooking breakfast we were privileged and overjoyed to witness a daddy blackbird teaching his offspring to look for food. At first we thought it was a pair of blackies but I didn't think the colouring was right for a female, then I saw daddy hop over to Junior and feed him with a worm or bug that he had picked up and realised what was happening. Junior followed dad around the garden a bit and then was escourted to a hiding place under the bushes whilst dad flew off. A few minutes after and Junior popped out, poked up his head and was looking around, probably wondering where dad was with his breakfast! Dad swooped down and fed him again and then disappeared again. We watched them for quite some time and eventually Junior decided he was bored under the bushes and flew up onto the garage roof, looking for dad again. I was a bit concerned that he was vulnerable to the neighbourhood cats so kept an eye on him and after a little while he flew off. I was thrilled to have witnessed this and if I had thought to take a photo, it would have most definitely been my photo for today. I didn't though, so the picture is a rubbish one of an unknown shrub in next door's very overgrown garden which was absolutely buzzing with bees all day long and into the evening. We also watched a little mouse eating from the bird table. Patrick had gone to put some bread crumbs on it and as he reached it, a little mouse nibbling away just stopped dead and froze, eyeballed him for a while and then scurried down the fence and under the bushes. All of these little lives going on in our world, what a lovely thought.

Day 7 #100HappyDays. (Monday 2nd June - both my boys home together) Michael came home from University in York yesterday so joined Mason and now I have both of my boys home together. Not for long though! Michael is planning on returning to York after a week or so and also has an offer of an internship for the summer down in Oxford.
The end of June saw me reach the milestone of my half century, how on earth did that happen? I was only 21 last week surely! The day before my birthday, my lovely work colleagues managed to trick me out of my office whilst they decorated it with balloons.

They then presented me with a lovely thoughtful gift of a Red Letter Day voucher for a brewery tour and pub lunch at one of my favourite places, Cropton which is based at The New Inn in Cropton, North Yorkshire. We just so happen to have a cottage booked there for a week in November so I have been able to book our treat for that week. Needless to say both Patrick and I are really looking forward to that.

Since last year I had been umming and ahhing about whether or not to bother with a celebration and if so, what to do. I don't like a fuss really but felt that I should do something, afterall 50 is a pretty big milestone so I decided to have a small party in my house for family and close friends.

I'm very lucky to have a fella who cooks, so Patrick offered to cook the curries. Three HUGE curries, enough rice to feed a fairly large Indian village and other nibbles like pakoras, bhajis and samosas there was a fair old feast awaiting our visitors. I had bought wine and best of all a 36 pint cask (along with a hand pump) of one of my favourite beers, Jem's Stout from local brewers Great Newsome, this is a family run micro brewery and we had beer from them for Patrick's 50th birthday too. Their service and helpfulness is second to none and I really would recommend them if you're having a party or whatever and want a cask of ale delivering and setting up. It was a lovely evening and I enjoyed having the people I love around me. I'm quite irritated with myself that I didn't take more photos though. My two sons had disappeared back upstairs, being the antisocial brats that they are, before I thought to get the camera out but here are just a few of friends and family.
I must recount the story of the Bain Marie so it doesn't get forgotten in the midsts of time. I had borrowed slow cookers from family members so that we would be able to keep the food warm once it was cooked and ready to serve and Patrick's sister Coral had a borrowed 'Bain Marie' which she offered to us to use for rice. Well, with a bain marie, you fill the base with hot water and the dishes of food then sit in that and stay warm - easy peasy. All was under control in the kitchen so Patrick sent me off upstairs to get myself changed and prettied up ready for our guests to arrive. I hereby place it on record that as usual Justine was first to arrive at 6pm prompt but I digress, back to the story I go. Whilst I was upstairs getting ready, Patrick decided it was time to fill the 'bain marie' with the hot water and using my large 2 litre jug began to do just that. One jugful in and it didn't seem to even be halfway there so another jugful goes in. It's during the pouring in of this second jugful that Patrick hears the trickling sound of dripping water and realises that the 'bain marie' isn't a bain marie at all and that four litres of water are now pouring out of it, all over my kitchen floor! What's more is that it's actually an electrical hotplate that he's poured water all over!! Luckily there were no parts for the water to seep into, it was a smooth stainless steel plate and the water had just run off it and under the frame which the food dishes rest on. By the time I came downstairs looking gorgeous, he had cleaned it all up, which was just as well because I would have flapped and panicked. I was able to see the funny side which if I'd been there and having kittens about the mess, I wouldn't have done. Coral, when later tackled about this and informed that it wasn't in fact a bain marie found the whole thing hilarious and just said "No, I know it's not a bain marie but that's just what I call it". Not much you can say to that really is there?

It's surprising how you forget how you felt until you read your own words back. So, I think I'd better try and bring things up to date as much as possible. So much has happened that I'll have blog in installments to bring myself up to date.

First up, back in May we went to a fantastic food and beer festival in Ludlow, Shropshire. It was held in the grounds of Ludlow Castle and rather than me trying to remember and describe it all, I'll just point you in the direction of this fabulous blog post by Patrick. He does a great job of telling the tale and below are some photos that I took on the day.

Next event up was our annual summer holiday. Instead of the usual cottage stay, we had opted for a boating holiday on the Norfolk Broads and off we went in mid-June. The weather had been horrendous in the weeks leading up to our holiday, rainy, windy and just plain horrible but actually, during the week we were away we were pretty lucky and it only rained briefly one afternoon, it rained every night but we were tucked up and cosy on the boat then so it didn't matter.

I have to say that my feelings now, four months on are still "Least said, soonest mended"! Let's just say that I didn't take to it and was very nervous driving the boat all week. On the way down, we stopped off in Kings Lynn at Beers of Europe for supplies of our favourite Belgian Ales to take onboard. The place really is a beer lover's paradise and we spent rather a lot of time (and money) in there! We stayed in Norwich overnight and visited some of the lovely pubs there before driving to Stalham the next day to pick up our boat. After a (very) short drive / sail (not sure what to call it) out of the boatyard and a quick tutorial on how to moor up, we were on our way. I can't say I really enjoyed the week on the boat, although I wouldn't say I hated it either. For me, it was just a stressful experience and I wouldn't want to do it again.

Still, we got lots of photos of ducks, geese and swans :-)

It was being held inside the Holy Trinity Church in Hull's market place which is apparently the largest parish church in the UK.

I arrived on the Thursday at around 5:30 ready to start my shift on the handpulled beers bar at 6pm not knowing what to expect really. Luckily I already knew either to talk to or by sight a lot of the other volunteers and of course I know the Committee. Having signed in and been given my festival staff tee shirt (a bright orange number) featuring the name of one of the sponsors Great Newsome Brewery I toddled down to the bar - a very, very long bar. It was nice and quiet for a while so I could familiarise myself with the layout, all beers being alphabetically by brewery, it was easy enough to negotiate. Once people started arriving, it was all about keeping an eye on who might be waving a glass in the air for a refill and not keeping people waiting too long. I soon got into the swing of it. The church setting was stunning as was remarked upon by a large number of the festival-goers and with the added advantage of keeping the beers nice and cool and the disadvantage of us volunteers being absolutely freezing!!

Patrick arrived at around 8pm and had a good mooch around whilst waiting for my shift to end at 9pm when I could join him for a couple of beers. I had enjoyed a half of something that I can't remember for the life of me now whilst working and as soon as I was able to get away, I made straight for the Gravity Bar area where the stronger beers are dispensed straight from the cask. I was aiming right for Brass Castle Brewery's Bad Kitty, a chocolate/vanilla porter that I have been hearing great things about. I wasn't disappointed, it was wonderful. I didn't have anymore to drink after that, up for work on Friday and all that!

I also worked the 6pm to 9pm shift on Friday evening, this time on the tokens and glasses desk. This was very hard work and I never stopped once in three hours. I think three hours is too long for that task personally, having now experienced it. There is a constant queue of people coming in, needing to buy tokens to exchange for beer and pay a deposit for a glass as well as the people who are bringing back tokens to cash in and wanting their deposit back on the glass they have returned. Lots of people didn't know the drill so having to explain the system and work out how many tokens they wanted/could have and giving change because almost everyone had notes rather than pound coins was all a bit mind boggling and I really felt exhausted at 9pm. We had started to run out of the more popular beers too so a few people, having paid to come in and then bought tokens were a bit miffed and were coming straight back to cash in their tokens in disgust. This is a problem every year really, a successful festival obviously wants to have sold all the beers by the time it finishes but customers want to be able to come in and have a choice of all the beers in the programme. You simply cannot have both of those things and I really don't know the solution, or even if there is one.

Patrick's friend Paul had come along so after my shift I went to find the pair of them. I had a few beers, chatted to a few people and generally relaxed and enjoyed the rest of the Friday evening session. The beers I had wanted to try had all sold out but I enjoyed the ones I had instead. By Saturday morning there was only 9 casks left out of 85 and those sold out before 1.30pm. That is a successful festival and thanks must go to the hardworking Committee and volunteers, most of whom did much, much more than my palty two shifts. And of course the church itself because there is no doubt at all that the surroundings made the festival much more accessible and interesting to the general public. There were a lot of people who had never been to one of our CAMRA festivals before and if we've managed to convince a few of them that cask beer is good stuff, we'll have done our duty!

I'll leave you with a few photos from inside the church and I think you'll agree, it's beautiful, even if the photos were only taken with my phone. (I do hope there is no one there who shouldn't be!!)
I'm chuffed to bits Squirrel, thank you so much!

Now I have to bestow this onto 15 other bloggers so I'll have to have a think about that.

The other 'rule' is that I have to tell you seven things about myself...hmm:

All I ever wanted to do when I was young was to work with animals..dogs in particular. How the hell did I end up doing accounts in an office??

I don't watch many movies nowadays because I get bored too easily and pick holes in plotlines. However I adore old musicals, especially with Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra. I could watch them over and over.

My favourite flower is the daffodil. I love the colour yellow and daffodils always herald the promise of milder weather and lighter nights.

I cannot sing a note in tune...this does not prevent me from singing along at top volume to songs I love on the radio

I hate ketchup, the stuff can actually make me retch if I get a whiff of it.

I have been a Bob Geldof fan since around 1977 and still adore him now.

I hate hot weather. It makes me lethargic and irritable. I prefer to be colder rather than hot, at least I can put warm clothing on to remedy that.

So, there are my seven things...I'm sure you all feel much better now you know!

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2303545173025280175.post-21749663100536947402012-04-17T18:21:00.001+01:002012-04-17T18:21:15.212+01:00Here I amBack again. I've just been busy with other things and not really had time or motivation to blog recently. However I do have some news for you. As you all know, I'm a real ale enthusiast and CAMRA member. Well for a good few months now I've been considering becoming more active in our local branch. There is currently a core of four or five people who do absolutely everything and I've been feeling that I wanted to help out in some capacity. So firstly, I have volunteered to work at our Annual Beer Festival which is being held this week from 19th to 21st, I'll blog about my experience on both sides of the bar at the weekend hopefully. Secondly and the main thing, I have joined the Committee as Pubs Officer for Hull. This actually is quite an undertaking and I'm not entirely sure I thought it through properly before volunteering!! However, I will give it my best shot. Basically I have to make contact with licensees of pubs in Hull and report to committee and members of any news or changes, current branch members often report any news to the pubs officer already so that will help. I also would like to encourage some licensees to become more involved in CAMRA promotional campaigns such as the discount scheme to get more CAMRA members through their doors and other campaigns that run throughout the year. Previously there just have not been enough people in the committee to do everything needed so I'm hoping to take some of that on. Now this would take a very confident and self-assured person one would think eh? Anyone who knows me well, knows that I am neither of those things so this will be a challenge for me. One I am looking forward to even though I am a little daunted by it. Wish me luck! The branch was also missing a proper webmaster due to the previous one having to give up due to work and family committments so Patrick has volunteered in that capacity too. He has designed a new branch website and I'll link to that when it goes live. It's been many hours of hard work but it's looking brilliant, we just need people to make decisions now before we can take it further.

In knitting news, my mojo went AWOL for a wee while but I've now finished the baby jacket for my work colleague. I hope she's having a little 'un because this has turned out much smaller than I expected.
I'm also halfway through the second of my Pretty Pink Bubbles socks. I love these socks, the pattern is so easy and yet pretty. The yarn which is Cygnet Wool Rich 4ply is a very cosy but I think it will felt easily so it will be hand wash with care for these. I am also now determined to finish Maude Louise before I allow myself to cast on another thing.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2303545173025280175.post-26061196747064851342012-03-21T18:51:00.001+00:002012-03-21T18:52:29.165+00:00I have a wonderful fella...

He bought me these lovely daffodils just to cheer me up. It's a fun idea so here are my answers.

1.Of all the projects you’ve knitted for yourself, which is the one that you wear most often?
Hmm...I actually wear most of my handknits fairly regularly but at the moment, I'm probably wearing my February Lady or Purple Greenjeans most often. I do wear my shawls all the time in the colder months, I wear them as scarves under my coat and of course all of my hats get regular outings too :-)

2.What item would you never knit, even if you were offered a million pounds/dollars/euros to make one?
Crikey, I think I'd knit a cover for the Humber Bridge if I was offered that kind of money! Haha. I can't think of anything I wouldn't knit for that but certainly there are things I just don't have any desire to knit. Dishcloths/Facecloths for instance, I've done them but I really don't get all the fuss that some knitters make of them. Another thing I really, really would never want to knit (or wear) is THESE!!

3.Do you have a favourite place to knit in your home?
In my house not particularly, though it's usually the sofa I have been known to knit in bed. My favourite place of all is on Patrick's sofa in his house because it has a recliner so I get my legs up and I'm settled for the duration.

4.How long do you spend knitting per day?
I don't always have time to knit everyday because I work full-time. I do find that work gets in the way of life sometimes ;-). On the evenings I can knit though, I do make the most of it. I get cosy on the sofa once the dinner dishes are washed and any chores are done. I rarely watch TV, so I plug a podcast or audiobook into my ears and do nothing but knit and listen until bedtime. Some evenings that can be two or three hours if I'm lucky.

5.Do you have a favourite knitting (or other craft) magazine?
Twist Collective. Hands down favourite, I read it from cover to cover every issue and although I've never got around to purchasing any patterns yet, I'm sure it's only a matter of time until I do because I have loads of them in my favourites on Ravelry. I don't tend to buy knitting magazines because I think they are a bit pricey at around a fiver and I don't really have a fiver to spare very often.

6.Have you ever used knitting needles for something other than knitting?
No. I've often been tempted to strangle people with my circulars though!

7.Have you ever – successfully – taught another person to knit?
Unfortunately not. I've never even successfully persuaded anyone to let me try, despite many attempts with various work colleagues and friends.

8.What is your favourite flavour of crisps?
Oh it has to be Walker's Cheese and Onion...in a sandwich of nice fresh bread from the bakery. Yum Yum.

9.Have you ever given up knitting for a long period of time (more than six months)?
Well I actually had a break of around 15 years but I have no idea why. It wasn't intentional, I just stopped knitting. I used to knit in the 1980's when I first had learned and because all women's magazines at that time tended to have a knitting pattern or two in them. I had no idea of nice yarns back then and would just buy cheap acylic from our local bargain shop but I did knit some nice things, a Mohair jumper back in the day when they were ultra-fashionable which was envied by all my friends. Then when my first son was born, I knitted clothing and toys for him up to around 1994 when my second son was born. And then I stopped. Like I say, I don't know why but I still feel guilty to this day that the only handknits son2 had were hand-me-downs from son1 :-(. Then when I took up knitting again around four years ago I discovered Ravelry and my fate was sealed!

10.What makes you laugh?
I think it's easier to say what doesn't make me laugh really. I can't bear silly 'alternative comedy' (alternative in this situation usually just means that it is comedy that isn't funny!). I hated The Young Ones and Bottom and those kinds of things. One thing I do laugh at which is to my discredit really, is other folks having accidents. Now I don't mean big accidents obviously that would be horrible, but if someone trips in the street or walks into something I just cannot help myself from laughing. Cute animals or babies doing comical things also can crack me up.

11.What is your favourite book?
I always answer this with To Kill A Mockingbird because Scout really is my favourite fictional character ever but really I love lots of books. Little Women is another favourite. I joined Goodreads a while back and I really enjoy browsing that and seeing other readers opinions and reviews of books I've either read or want to read.

12.Do you accurately know how much yarn you own?
I do put stash on Ravelry and connect it to projects I've knitted so I think I'm there or thereabouts with it. I also have it all on shelves in my bedroom so I can see it. I used to forget what I had, even though it was on Rav but seeing it all there inspires me to choose projects to match my stash.

So there we are. Now I am supposed to choose 12 bloggers to ask my 12 questions to but I'm afraid I only have 7 so stand up and be counted
